Black Friday 2020 Review
Online shopping volume increased 2.5 times on Black Friday
Black Friday, a shopping frenzy in the e-commerce sector, offered great discount opportunities to shopping enthusiasts this year. According to the data of PayTR, a payment institution that offers innovative products and solutions developed by Turkish engineers, the volume of online shopping increased by 166 percent on Black Friday. The most preferred products were in the textile (clothing), footwear and electronics categories, respectively.
Black Friday, which is eagerly awaited every year in November, offered great opportunities for consumers and businesses this year. Serious increases in shopping volumes were observed during this period of opportunity, when many consumers waited to meet their needs and shop.
According to the data of PayTR, the virtual POS payment institution developed by Turkish engineers and authorized by the BRSA in 2016, the volume of online shopping on Black Friday increased by 166 percent and the number of transactions by 162 percent compared to last year. The top three categories with the highest sales were textiles (clothing), shoes and electronics.
Textile expenditures surpass electronics
While electronics was the most shopped category last year, the textile sector was popular this year. The average basket amount decreased compared to last year. The figure, which was 647 TL last year, dropped to 247 TL this year.
Compared to the turnover in November, the increase in Black Friday last year was 40 percent, while this year it was about 61 percent. Shopping volume was concentrated between 00:00-02:00 and 18:00-21:00. The most shopped cities were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Bursa and Trabzon, respectively.
Commenting on the subject, PayTR General Manager Tarık Tombul said the following: “We know that with the pandemic process, consumers’ shopping preferences have shifted towards online shopping and transactions made through e-commerce have started a rapid rise. Information from the sector shows that the online trade volume reached the best figures of all time on ‘Black Friday’, the most anticipated time of the year for shopping. PayTR data also supports this. This year, we have seen a 2.5-fold increase compared to last year only on ‘Black Friday’, and when we compare Friday with other days in November, there was a 61 percent increase. While the average basket was 647 TL due to the intensity of transactions in the electronics category in the past years, this year I see that the basket average decreased to 247 TL and we had a textile and clothing-oriented Black Friday. This rapid increase in online trade seems to continue at the same pace in 2021.”
